How hourly pay is taxed in Florida
Hourly pay is not taxed differently from salary — the IRS and Florida both look at total wages for the pay period. What makes hourly withholding feel erratic is that the percentage method annualizes whatever you earned in that specific period. A week with twelve hours of overtime is annualized as though every week looked like that, so the withholding rate on that check is higher than your real annual rate. It evens out across the year and comes back as a refund; it is not an error.
Overtime itself follows the Fair Labor Standards Act: non-exempt employees earn at least one and a half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. The overtime calculator explains which part of that counts as the premium, which matters now that federal law allows a deduction of up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for qualified overtime premium pay.

At $20 an hour a full-time worker in Florida takes home about $35,606 a year, roughly $1,369.45 every two weeks. Moving to $30 an hour raises gross pay by $20,800 but take-home by only $16,713, because the extra earnings are taxed at a higher marginal rate — one of the clearest illustrations of why a raise never lands in full.
Overtime, double time and multiple rates
The calculator accepts overtime at 1.5× or 2× on top of your regular hours. If you work shift differentials or hold two roles at different rates for the same employer, federal law requires overtime to be computed on a weighted-average regular rate rather than whichever rate you happened to be working at the time — a detail employers get wrong often enough that it is worth checking against your stub. For a week-by-week view, the timecard calculator totals daily hours and deducts unpaid breaks before applying the overtime threshold.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my hourly paycheck in Florida?
Multiply your rate by regular hours, add overtime at 1.5 times the rate for hours over 40 in a week, subtract pre-tax deductions, then apply federal withholding, 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare — Florida has no state income tax. The calculator above does each step and shows the individual lines.
Why is more tax taken out of a paycheck with overtime?
Because withholding annualizes the pay period. A check that includes overtime looks to the payroll system like a higher annual salary, so it is withheld at a higher rate. Your annual tax does not change; the extra withholding comes back when you file. Overtime is not taxed at a special penalty rate.
How much is $20 an hour after taxes in Florida?
About $35,606 a year, or roughly $1,369.45 per bi-weekly paycheck, for a single filer working 40 hours a week with no pre-tax deductions. That is an effective rate of 14.4% across federal tax and FICA.
Does Florida require overtime pay after 8 hours in a day?
Federal law requires overtime only after 40 hours in a workweek. A handful of states — California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado among them — also require daily overtime. Florida follows the federal weekly rule, so hours over 40 in a week trigger overtime but a long single day does not.
