Salary After Taxes

A salary figure is a gross number, and the gap between it and what reaches your account is larger than most people expect — between 17% and 35% depending on where you work and how you file. These pages answer the question directly: this salary, this state, this is the take-home.

How much of a salary do you actually keep?

Between roughly 65% and 84% of gross, and the two variables that move it most are your income level and your state. The federal schedule is graduated, so the share you keep falls as income rises — from about 84% at $40,000 to around 74% at $175,000 for a single filer, before any state tax. State and local tax then adds anywhere from nothing to about 12% of gross.

Gross, taxable and take-home are three different numbers

Gross salary is the figure in your offer letter. Taxable income is gross less pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction — $16,100 for a single filer in 2026 — and it is what the tax brackets actually apply to. Take-home is what reaches your account. Lenders underwrite against gross, which is why an approved mortgage can still feel unaffordable against the third number.

Using these pages

Each salary page runs the full 2026 calculation across all fifty states and DC, ranked from the highest take-home to the lowest, with monthly and per-paycheck figures and the effect of filing jointly. The hourly pages convert a rate into annual, monthly, weekly and per-paycheck terms and show what different schedules — part time, seasonal, with regular overtime — do to the annual figure. The state-specific pages add that state's own brackets, local taxes and payroll premiums.

Frequently asked questions

What is a $100,000 salary after taxes?

It depends entirely on the state. A single filer keeps about $79,180 in Texas, $72,840 in California and $70,126 in New York City once state and local tax are included. Federal tax and FICA are identical in all three.

Is take-home pay the same as net pay?

Yes. Both mean the amount left after all taxes and deductions have come out — the figure that is actually deposited. Gross pay is the headline salary before anything is withheld.
