Paycheck Calculators by State

Federal withholding and FICA are the same wherever you work. Everything after that is a state decision — and the spread is enormous. A $75,000 salary keeps about $61,592 in Texas and roughly $55,335 in Oregon, purely because of state and local tax.

The nine states with no income tax

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming take nothing from wages. That is not quite the same as taking nothing from your paycheck: Alaska withholds an employee unemployment contribution, and Washington deducts both a paid-leave premium and an uncapped long-term care premium that together cost a $100,000 earner about $1,390 a year. New Hampshire repealed the last piece of its income tax in 2025 and is now genuinely tax-free on both wages and investment income.

Where local income tax matters most

Roughly one worker in six pays a city, county or school district income tax, and the concentration is uneven. Ohio stacks up to four separate income taxes on one paycheck — state, work city, residence city net of credit, and school district. Kentucky has around three hundred local occupational tax jurisdictions and Pennsylvania has an Act 32 earned income tax in almost every municipality plus Philadelphia's own system. Every Maryland resident pays a county income tax, and all ninety-two Indiana counties levy one. These are the pages where a generic national calculator goes wrong.

If you are paid by the hour, each state also has a dedicated hourly page that handles overtime, double time and the state minimum wage.

Frequently asked questions

Which state has the highest income tax on a paycheck?

California has the highest top marginal rate at 13.3% including the Mental Health Services surcharge, but for a typical middle income the heaviest burdens are in Oregon, which starts at 4.75% on the first dollar, and in cities that stack a local tax on a high state rate — Portland, New York City and Philadelphia in particular.

Do I pay income tax where I live or where I work?

Generally the state where the work is physically performed taxes the income first, and your home state taxes your worldwide income while granting a credit for what you paid elsewhere. Reciprocity agreements override that for certain state pairs, and New York's convenience-of-the-employer rule overrides it in the opposite direction for remote workers.

Which states changed their income tax for 2026?

Kentucky cut its flat rate to 3.5%, Georgia to 4.99% retroactive to January, Mississippi to 4%, Indiana to 2.95%, Nebraska's top rate to 4.55%, North Carolina to 3.99% and Ohio to a flat 2.75%. Utah and West Virginia both cut rates mid-year. Minnesota launched a new paid-leave payroll deduction on 1 January.
